How do I create a portfolio on Morningstar.com?

To create and save your portfolio on our website, you first must be a registered user of Morningstar.com. Click here to sign-up:

https://members.morningstar.com /memberstpages/membership.htm

Here are instructions on how to create a portfolio:

  1. Click on the "Portfolio" tab on the home page. If you have not already logged on to the site, you will be prompted to do so.
  2. If you are creating your first portfolio on the site, a page called "Select Portfolio or Watchlist" will appear.
  3. Choose your Entry Method - "Create New" or "Import". "Create New" allows you to manually enter investments into Portfolio Manager. "Import" allows you to import your portfolio from a number of third party programs including Excel, Intuit Quicken, Microsoft Money, MSN Money.com, Quicken.com, or Yahoo! Finance.
  4. There are two different kinds of portfolios that can be built on the site: "Watch List" portfolios and "Transaction" portfolios. Watch List Portfolios can be built by simply assigning the individual stocks or funds you to wish track without requiring any additional information. Transaction portfolios allow more details to be added to the portfolio, allowing for greater historical tracking and analysis. Please choose the portfolio type you wish to build by clicking on the appropriate button here.
  5. Click on the Continue button.
  6. If you choose "Create New", you will see three tabs--Stock/Fund, Bond, and Cash. Click on each tab to enter different types of holdings into the portfolio. First, enter your Portfolio name.
With a Portfolio, you will need to enter date of purchase, ticker (for Stock/Fund) or Name (for Bond or Cash), quantity, and purchase price. If you are unsure of purchase price simply click on the $ icon next to price column and the program will auto-populate the historical price based on purchase date.
If you are building a Watch List, you are only required to enter the ticker symbol (for Stock/Fund) or name (for Bond and Cash), and all other fields are optional. Use your tab key or mouse to move from one field to the next.
You will be able to enter a total of 140 holdings. Once you have entered all of your holdings, click on the Done button.
  7. You will be brought to a page titled Choose Your Portfolio Monitoring Features. This page will allow you to sign up for e-mail updates on your portfolio.
We highly recommend that you sign up for Portfolio Updates and Alerts. This is the easiest way to keep track of important changes in your portfolio.
Once you have selected your options, click Done.
  8. If you choose "Import", you will be prompted to select a file to import or paste from a clipboard. You can browse your directories to find your file and when added, click Continue. Your file will be imported into Portfolio Manager.
  9. Verify that all of your information is correct or make any necessary changes and click Continue. You now have an active portfolio.
  10. Now you will see your portfolio. You can change the view in the Tracking tab, or Click on the My View tab to create your own personalized view.

This should get you started!

How do I print from the Portfolio Manager?

There are two portfolio reports that we have formatted, and therefore support: Portfolio Snapshot View Report and Portfolio X-Ray Overview Report (Premium customers only).

  1. To print one of these reports, choose the portfolio you wish to print. Scroll over Create on the toolbar and click Print from the dropdown.
  2. This will take you to the Print-Friendly Portfolio Report window, where you can choose which report you would like to print. Click Snapshot View or X-Ray Overview and a formatted printer window will display.
  3. Click on the Print icon in your browser toolbar.

If you need to print other views from your browser, we have found that going first to "Print Preview" and making adjustments there before printing will often give you a better printout.

Also, we've heard from some users who have better luck printing from Internet Explorer 8.0 than from other internet browsers. Are you using Internet Explorer? If you would like to try it, you can download it from the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/

What happened to my portfolio? I saved it, and now I can't find it.

Here is the most common reason that this happens:

Are you trying to access your portfolio through a bookmark or favorites tab? If you are, please make sure the bookmark or favorites is saved at http://www.morningstar.com and not the portfolio page. Whenever changes are made to the Portfolio Manager, your portfolio will be assigned a new URL, therefore, you will have problems trying to access your portfolio. If this is the case, please go to the home page and bookmark it here. Next, click on the "Portfolio" tab to access your portfolio.

Have you created a second membership? We have found that, rather than change the street or e-mail address on their accounts, many customers will create a brand new free account with us, and will then be confused about which account contains the portfolios they saved. To avoid this, make sure you only sign up for one account, and use the Membership area of the site to update contact information.

If this is not the case, and you are still unable to access your portfolio, please let us know through our feedback form . Please include in your message a description of the steps you are taking and what occurs. Also, please let us know the type of computer, operating system, modem speed, browser, and browser version you are using. With this additional information, we will be able to assist you more quickly.

How do I remove a saved portfolio or watch list from Morningstar.com?

To do this, please follow the steps below.

  1. Open the portfolio by clicking on the tab called "Portfolio" on the navigation bar of the home page, http://www.morningstar.com. This will bring you to the Portfolio Manager page, where the most recent portfolio you viewed will be displayed.
  2. If you have multiple portfolios entered, choose the portfolio you wish to delete from the drop down list.
  3. Once you have selected the portfolio you wish to delete, click on "Modify" on the Portfolio Manager tool bar and choose "Delete Portfolio" from the drop down. This will bring you to the Organize Your Portfolios & Watch Lists screen.
  4. Each individual portfolio or watchlist will have a small white box on the far left. Click on the box next to the portfolio or watchlist you wish to delete, and a check mark will appear to indicate your choice.
  5. Once the box has been checked, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Delete. A popup box will appear to confirm that you want to delete the portfolio/watchlist. Clicking on OK will delete the portfolio/watchlist from Portfolio Manager.

Why are some of my holdings showing up in my portfolio twice?

It is possible that this occurred when the holdings were entered. When you clicked Save Portfolio, you may have received a message stating:

"The following ticker symbols could not be found in our databases. Portfolio holdings that are not securities and unrecognized securities can be left as they are. After clicking the Continue button below you may edit your portfolio from the Track Your Portfolio and X-Ray Your Portfolio views. Please do not use the back button on your browser to make any changes or corrections to your portfolio."

If you clicked the Back button on your browser after seeing this message instead of clicking Continue, your portfolio holdings will be entered twice. When you first click Save Portfolio and get the message, the current holdings have already been saved. So if you click the Back button on your browser to make changes and click Save Portfolio again, the holdings are saved twice.

To delete the duplicated holdings, please follow the steps below.

For Watch List portfolios:

  1. Click on "Modify" on the Portfolio Manager tool bar and choose "Remove Holding(s)" from the drop down. This will bring you to the Edit screen which will look like a spreadsheet with your current holdings listed.
  2. Each individual holding line will have a small white box on the far left labeled "Delete." Click on the box next to the holding(s) you wish to delete, and a check mark will appear to indicate your choice.
  3. Once the box has been checked, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Done. Clicking on this button will save the changes you made to the portfolio.

For Transaction portfolios:

  1. Click on "Modify" on the Portfolio Manager tool bar and choose "Delete Holding(s)" from the drop down. This will bring you to the Edit screen which will look like a spreadsheet with your current holdings listed.
  2. Each individual holding line will have a small white box on the far left labeled "Delete." Click on the box next to the holding(s) you wish to delete, and a check mark will appear to indicate your choice.
  3. Once the box has been checked, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Delete. A popup box will appear to confirm that you want to delete the holdings. Clicking on OK will save the changes you made to the portfolio.

If you are exporting a Transaction portfolio please click on the Transaction tab, rather than the Positions tab located above your portfolio holdings. Additionally, because the Transaction view is already set up for export, you should skip to Step 7 in the instructions.

  4. Within your portfolio, locate the Views options above the portfolio and select +New View
  5. In the text box labeled View Name, enter a name in the box provided. This will be the title of the new view you create. Then, using the drop down menus under View Fields, select the following data points: Symbol, Shares Owned, Price Paid, and Trade Date. After all of the required data points have been added click Finished.
  6. You should now see your portfolio in the custom view just created. You are now ready to save your portfolio.
  7. Go to the File menu option on the browser's tool bar and choose Save As....

Note: If you are exporting a Transaction portfolio that includes more than 20 transactions, you will have to save multiple .html files, because Yahoo provides only 20 records per page. As a result, you must save the first 20, then click Next 20 in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Once the next page appears, repeat the save process for each group of 20 transactions you have listed. Make sure you save each page with a different name.

  8. In the dialog box, you will be prompted to provide a name and location for the file you're exporting. The file name should not exceed 20 characters.

Make sure to choose the Web Page, HTML only (*htm,*.html) file type in the Save as Type box. Please do not choose the Web Page, complete (*htm,*html) file type, as this will save unnecessary files on your hard drive.

Please write down the directory and file name before you save your portfolio. This information will be needed during the import process.

  9. Click Save to finish exporting your portfolio. You are now ready to import your portfolio into Morningstar.com.
  10. Go to Morningstar.com and login to Portfolio Manager.
  11. Click on the "Create" option from the toolbar and choose "Import". "Import Portfolio" window will open.
  12. In the "Import Portfolio" window, make sure "From File" tab is selected.
  13. Then click on the "Browse" button and locate the Yahoo! Finance file (that you just saved) to import.
  14. Click on the "Continue" button located in the lower right hand corner. You should see your portfolio information in the window. Please review the data and make any corrections.
  15. From the drop down menu, choose to keep or change the portfolio name. Then click "Continue". This completes the importing process.

What's the difference between the Total Return and Personal Return?

There are performance measures for different purposes from which we should expect to yield different results:

Total Return

Total Return measures the theoretical performance of your holdings for a specified period of time, taking into account the beginning and end values of your investments as well as dividends.

Personal Return

Personal Return calculates the investor's returns, taking into account an additional factor in its calculation: the capital that you added or withdrew from your fund or portfolio throughout the specified period of time. The calculation of Personal Return illustrates how your allocation of capital has affected the performance of your portfolio.

Why don't some of my holdings show up when I X-Ray my portfolio? They were there before.

This is occurring because the Portfolio X-Ray feature will not display portfolio statistics for Mutual Funds or Closed-End funds with statistics more than 1 year old. This is a restriction set in place by our portfolio manager team. This restriction exists because that team feels statistics generated from a portfolio more than a year old are no longer valid.

Fund Reports do not have this restriction because the portfolio " as-of" date is always shown along with the portfolio stats and portfolio holdings on these pages.

Why is the Portfolio X-Ray incomplete for my portfolio?

By any chance, did you create a Watch List? On the site, there are two types of portfolios: Watch List and Portfolio. With a Watch List you can add a stock, fund, or bond to a portfolio without entering prices or number of shares. However, if you create a Watch List and do not enter in prices or number of shares for your holdings, the results of the Portfolio X-Ray will be incomplete. Please note, the only information that will be included will be the top holdings.
